I'm sure I'm missing some things. I highly recommend reviewing the list of coupons you have loaded on your card on Cellfire, Shortcuts, P&G Esaver, and CouponLink. I think there are some matchups on mayonnaise and/or Miracle Whip too. Since moving I've been pretty MIA with couponing. This evening of couponing has brought me back! WOOHOO!!! I'll add more if I remember and after looking to head back tomorrow :)

At the end of my 3 transactions today I spent a little less than $43 and this is what I bought:

2 loaves Safeway bread, 1 Cinnamon Toast cruch, 1 Honey nut cheerios, 1 Nature Valley Trail mix granola bars, 1 Fiber One chewy Bars, 2 Better Oats oatmeals, 3 Brummel & Browns, 1 Scrubbing Bubbles Kit, 2 Clearanced Hamburger (6 lb for $8), 2 Pillsbury Grands, 1 Sweet Moments, 1 String Cheese, 2 Oscar Mayer franks, 2 lbs bananas, 3.8 lb navel oranges, 1 avocado, 2 baby carrots 2 lb bags, 1 BC cake mix, 1 BC frosting, , 1 Juanita Tortilla chips, 1 Imperial margarine, 3 GG boxed vegetables, 8 Yoplait cups, 1 milk, 1 pkg bless, sless chicken breasts

PHEW! If I had stuck with ONLY couponed items I would've saved a lot more but, alas, I hadn't been grocery shopping in over a month so I had to make some exceptions. I saved 63% which doesn't include the clearanced meat savings. This equates to $70!! I love couponing. It's funny though. After doing a blog post I see where I could have saved EVEN MORE and I kick myself... just a little ;)

HAPPY SHOPPING!!

A lot of the coupons are no longer available because of all the printing last week in preparation for this deal. Check RedPlum.com and Coupons.com for all of the coupons listed. Even if you can't get all of the coupons the rebate will make the prices very reasonable. If you're choosing between the larger packages of wipes and the tubs, the larget packages end up being only 1.8 cents each and the tubs end up 3.6 cents each. You'll spend a little more money but save in the end if you buy the refill bags.

MDA coupon booklet

If you've been looking for Safeway's infamous "make a muscle, make a difference" MDA coupon booklet and have yet to find it, come to the eastside! The 181st & Glisan Safeway just got their shipment of these little booklets over the weekend. They're up at the registers. Hopefully there will be more deals in the next couple of weeks using these coupons again!

Great Internet Printable website!

E-centives.com has some great coupons available for printing. You don't need to sign up and they carry General Mills and Betty Crocker brands as well as other brands. The best thing about this site? NONE of the coupons are DO NOT DOUBLE! AWESOME!! Using this site for this weeks Safeway deals that end 8/17.

Safeway moneymakers!

This week is amazing at Safeway. Go to frugalivingnw.com for the list of items.

U-pick!!

It's that time of year! Currently we are in peak picking season for most berries. I've gone picking with my 3-year old twice in the last two weeks. If you're unsure where to go, visit http://www.pickyourown.org/ and find a u-pick farm in your area.

Yesterday I went and picked strawberries, rhubarb, and blueberries at Sandy Farms for $1 per pound. I left spending $7 which equated to 3 lbs of strawberries, 3 lbs of blueberries, and 1 lb of rhubarb. I've compared prices at the grocery store and the comparison is shocking. At the stores, blueberries are about $3/lb minimum and rhubarb is over $2/lb. To save yourself some money, take some kids and go picking!

Last week I bought 11 lbs of strawberries and 7 lbs raspberries at, again, $1 PER POUND! SO CHEAP considering the price of most berries in the stores.

Wear close-toed shoes and long pants (if picking strawberries), and bring some water along with containers. Don't forget to have your containers weighed BEFORE you pick. The strawberries at that farm are HUGE and the blueberries are REALLY easy to pick. Next week, I'm picking more blueberries and pie cherries. By next week, they will also have marionberries, loganberries, more raspberries, and more!

An added perk? Somehow there are NO MOSQUITOS over there so I didn't get any bites. However, I did get several by walking out in my backyard to pick strawberries...

How to shop Rite Aid!

This post is for the purpose of helping you be more successful at Rite Aid. Here's an example of what you can achieve:

Saturday 7/3/10 I went to Rite Aid. Paid $8.84 with a $2 rebate after three separate transactions making total cost $6.84. Total before coupons would have been $73.83 so I saved 92% using coupons. This was with last week's Rite Aid deals but I'll give you ideas for what you can do every week.

#1- Look for the FREE items. First, free OOP. Second, free after rebate. Third, free after Wellness Credit (new Rite Aid program). These items will help you reach your $20 total without costing you anything.

#2- Use $5 off $20 purchase coupon by watching some short advertisements with Rite Aid Video Values program. You get a coupon for each advertisement you watch, it's FREE to join, AND every month after you earn 20 credits you get the $5/$20 coupon. Make sure you print all the coupons you will need for the month because you can only use the print option on each coupon once.

#3- After you have the previous two things, get your total up to $20. Depending on how many free items I have, I will try buying things I need that I don't have coupons for. This way it's like the $5 is applying toward that item.

EXAMPLE:
1 Pampers $11.99 (+ $2 SCR)
1 Veet Hair Removal $6.49
1 Playtex Sports Tampons $3.99

Used $5/$20 purchase
$3/1 Pampers Mailer coupon
$3/1 Veet In-ad coupon
$3/1 Veet Video Values coupon
$3/1 Veet IP
$1/1 Playtex Video Values
$1/1 Playtex IP
PAY $3.47
Submit for $2 SCR
Total OOP $1.47

The Veet was a FREE/Moneymaker item. I ended up "making" $2.51 on it. I needed the tampons and diapers. Since I had a high value Pampers coupon and there was a rebate, I chose Pampers brand. That still only made the diapers $6.99 which isn't very cheap until you take the $5/$20 coupon off and the Veet credit. I'm still at -52 cents. Tampons after coupons were $1.99 which is a pretty good price and now we're at $1.47 total.

The point? Manipulate your purchase to your advantage. I normally wouldn't buy Veet but it's a free/moneymaker so it's worth it. So before you go shopping, make a list of items you need, items you use that are cheap, and free items. Then try different combinations to get your total barely above the $20 minimum and making your OOP pocket change! That easy... :)

Does anyone follow this blog??

I've been thinking about all the posts I wanted to put up here over the last couple of weeks. I've gotten some AWESOME deals that I'd like to share. However, I have little to no motivation to post anything if no one is reading it. Is anyone out there? Anyone reading and using the info?? Pleeeeease let me know. I give it a week. If there are no comments on this blog, I'm going to stop posting and cancel the site.

IF SOMEONE IS READING THIS, please comment and give suggestions on what you would like to see posted. Recently I've just been giving you the deals I actually purchase more for motivational purposes and to give you an idea of how to use coupons best. If there's other information you're wanting, let me know! Or if I should change the layout or something to make it more user friendly, that would be good to know too. Thanks for your input... if there is any!

Raised Bed Gardening

Kevin built two raised beds for our upcoming vegetable garden. By the end of this week we should have more pictures with dirt and a few starter plants!!

Here's the 10x4:

And below is the 6x2 that Kevin designed himself. It looks GREAT! We will definitely be taking this one with us when we move. I don't know how but I don't care, we're keeping it! It looks like one you would buy at a gardening store. Good job Kevin!

So after spending a few hours gardening/weeding/prepping I realized how strangely relaxing it is. My muscles are sore and we (Kevin and I) are both  exhausted but I feel like I do after a good workout.

Advice for anyone building raised beds:
Look on Craigslist for cheap treated wood. The treated wood for these two boxes (the 6x2 has a bottom) was a little over $100. YIKES! We still have to get soil too. Walmart here we come! :)

Making Yogurt in a Slow Cooker

Ingredients:
1/2 gal of milk (8 cups)
1/2 c instant non-fat dry milk
1/2 c plain yogurt (whole, low fat, or non--fat)

Put milk and dry milk into slow cooker. Heat on low for 2-1/2 hrs (until temp 180F). Turn off slow cooker and let cool for 3 hrs. Should be at temp of 100-110F. Add culture (i.e. yogurt) and stir. Close slow cooker and cover with towels for 8 hours. Try to maintain temp of 100F. Check periodically and raise temp by turning onto warm or low setting for 10 min. After 8 hours, put in closed containers in fridge until cooled.

If sweetened yogurt is desired, add additional sweeteners, flavorings, or spices.

If desired, add one or several of the following to the entire batch:
1/2 c sugar, honey, molasses, maple syrup, or artificial sweetener
2 T flavorings (vanilla, almond, lemon, peppermint, etc.)
2 tsp spices

Whenever you are flavoring yogurt, always remember to leave 1 cup plain, so that you will have fresh starter for the next batch.

For jam, preserve, and peanut butter flavors, put 1/2 c flavoring into the warm milk-yogurt mixture before incubating for 8 hours. If fresh, canned, or dried fruit is desired, additions should be made after the 8 hours of incubation because the acid content of some fruits can curdle the milk-yogurt mixture and prevent proper fermentation.

For thicker yogurt, don't add any extra flavorings or sugar and let strain through a coffee filter or cheesecloth. I would recommend doing this after cooling in the fridge to make sure the chemistry of the mixture remains the same through the cooling process.Without straining, yogurt will be a thin fat free yogurt consistency.

MAKES 2 QUART JARS FULL
Expires after approx. 10 days in fridge

SAVINGS???

Yoplait "Sale" Price .50/6 oz container

The ULTIMATE savings

I am about to embark on an adventure for the ultimate in savings. Coupons are great but there are some items that never have coupons. The perfect example of that? Vegetables. As of yesterday, our family is growing a garden. We've been talking about it since we moved into this house but had yet to begin the quest. Here are a few things I have learned so far... hopefully this will help any of you first time vegetable gardeners:

1. This is OVERWHELMING! Way worse than coupons. But, just as with couponing, you just have to get out there and do it and then it will be much LESS overwhelming.

2. Not every yard is built for a garden... ours being one of those. We have soppy soil that has THE WORST drainage and very little sun- two things that make for less than ideal conditions for a vegetable garden. Here is where the creative thinking begins!

3. Raised container beds can be put ANYWHERE. The only place in our backyard that gets regular sun is on top of our deck. Therefore, we are building two 10' x 2' x 8" beds that will be placed in an L shape along the house. Of course that deck isn't solid so they will have to have a bottom with holes drilled where the gaps are in the slats of the deck. (Hopefully the weight of these two containers doesn't make the deck buckle...)

4. Chemistry is KEY! I'm still learning but one thing I was told was that peas release nitrogen and spinach uses it (or visa versa...) so I can plant spinach between each pea plant because they will help each other. (Things like that I need to learn A LOT more about)

5. Get excited! I know this is going to take a lot of work but the feeling of being completely self reliant and canning my own vegetables is great! I can just imagine all the money I will save in the years to come!

So we are planting green beans, sugar snap peas, broccoli (from a start), onions (from a start, apparently they keep the bugs away and you can use them to fill in unused spaces along the edges), and spinach (another good filler and supposedly VERY easy to grow). We will also be planting tomatoes and peppers in a friends garden. PLUS I'm growing herbs in our south facing kitchen window. This place is the only ideal place inside and outside for growing anything. Apparently south facing windows are good because they get constant sun and above the kitchen sink is great because it will give the herbs the added moisture they need to grow. So, first up- cilantro. We use it a lot. Then I'll try basil and parsley and thyme.

AND I think I'm going to try growing potatoes... in a garbage bag. Interesting, huh? Click here to read about it.

... In another week or two I will post pictures of our actual garden, until then you get the internet's :)
